The more speculative half of the answer is that it is their bread winner and deviating from it is a risk. Every year they aren't releasing a Trails game is a year less that they have. It's literally a race against time to finish before the people who started it won't be around to see it to completion. It has and will take a long time to finish (it was about 60% done with the release of Hajimari), and a lot of the people who were core to it's creation are approaching retirement age. The non-speculative half of this answer is just that Trails was designed to be grand and longform in scope and scale.
#Tokyo xanadu sequel series
I know Trails of the Sky didn't but do the Cold Steel games have any life simulation like Tokyo Xanadu which I'm a big fan of? I would guess most likely not but I would love to hear what makes this series really good in terms of gameplay since I'm not a huge fan of turn-based combat anymore. I checked some video and the newer trails game don't seem to be that different? (maybe nostalgia just affected how I remembered Trails of the Sky) But I honestly expected more improvement/evolution after so many years. I was a big fan back then because I didn't play that many games and only had a PSP. The only other Falcom games I've played are the 3 Trails of Sky games like more than a decade ago. I'm also thinking about playing the Trails of Cold Steel. I really want a sequel now, keeping the real time action combat (but refining and improving it of course), with the same cast but with romancing options since now most of the cast should be of or very close to adult age. Even though the game has NG+, I already feel like I need more of it lol, especially since it's a bit of a shame since there's no romance so I feel it's lacking in that area and the relationships could use more meaningful closure. I recently played Tokyo Xanadu ex+ while looking for a replacement for Persona 5R (or just any game with a life sim) and I'm so glad I found this gem.
